World Environment Day
Behind the scenes of our sustainable flowers this World Environment Day… June on our flower field!
Our field thrives by creating a healthy environmental ecosystem, from the soil up.
This means
Building soil that’s deep, rich and nutritious, with lots of worms and microscopic microbial variety
natural fertilizers; homemade is our preference! Seaweed picked on a beach walk, or homemade stinky comfrey are our favourites.
hardwork instead of herbicides! We dig weeds out never used glyphosate.
Encouraging natural predators to combat pests, instead of chemical sprays. Owls and heron eat our voles, toads try to eat all the slugs… and fail….
Growing a wide variety of plants - from trees and perennials to once flowering annuals, to create variety to cut for you, and for insects and pollinators to enjoy too.
Understanding water flow across our field and planting to best use that, reduces drought stress and the need for irrigation. This slows water run off that contributes to downstream flooding and river pollution. Habitat is created this way with frogs, toads, curlew and heron making the field their home over the year.
Additionally we’ve improved hedges, planted hundreds of trees including an orchard and dug a pond.
Why do we do this?
In action: humanity faces a catastrophic poly-crisis of climate change biodiversity loss and plastic pollution. We do what we can to create a better status quo and provide something that isn’t environmentally damaging for our customers in Cumbria.
